Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto (1697–1768), was an Italian painter celebrated for his luminous and highly detailed views of Venice. A master of the veduta, he combined architectural precision with atmospheric light, capturing the city’s canals, piazzas, and daily life with remarkable clarity. His works, often created with the aid of a camera obscura, are admired for their balance between realism and poetic atmosphere. Canaletto’s paintings played a key role in shaping Europe’s vision of Venice and remain among the most sought-after masterpieces of 18th-century Italian art.
